Katherine Hastings is the author of four full-length collections, most recently A Different Beauty (Spuyten Duyvil NYC, 2022), and several chapbooks.  Poet laureate emerita of Sonoma County, CA, she has edited three anthologies: Know Me Here — An Anthology of Poetry by Women; Digging Our Poetic Roots — Poems from Sonoma County; and What Redwoods Know — Poems from California State Parks.  
Her work has appeared in numerous anthologies, including The Book of Forms — A Handbook of Poetics (University Press of New England); Verde Que Te Quiero Verde: Poems After Federico Garcia Lorca; Beatitude; Fog and Light: San Francisco Through the Eyes of the Poets Who Live Here; and Pandemic Puzzle Poems, among others.  Her poems have appeared in Rattle; Comstock Review; Calyx; Spillway and many other journals.
Katherine curated and hosted the poetry program WordTemple on NPR affiliate KRCB FM and the WordTemple Poetry Series in Sonoma County for over a decade. Following the October 2017 firestorm in Napa and Sonoma Counties, she moved with her partner, Cathy Rayhill, to an island in the Niagara River in early 2018. 


Heron, Like Smoke

In the sapphire sky of the valley
over the old arms of oaks

where white feathered clouds float
your blue-grey wings lift you

aloft in flight, appear as  
rising spirits slow-moving 

to space. Your euphoric flight 
is charged by new daylight

propels us into memory beyond fire
beyond the slog of escape

beyond the catastrophe of ash
throbbing in the glass

of abandoned dreams
Light follows you, cuts a path

equal to the loss of the abandoned nest
equal to the freedom new beginnings bring
