Beatitude
I noticed Sol moving away
as my trusting fingers reached
to touch his rays. Perhaps too hot,
I thought, this pale light retreating
over the Blue Ridge tonight.

My sister made a photo album
of me at 16. I turn its pages
slowly now, images receding,
shrinking into atoms of memory.

Some tell us the universe is
expanding, first its star islands
abandon each other, later lone
stars escape, until light shines from
nowhere, neither above nor below.

But I won’t accept that after
infinite possible futures, only
absolute loneliness arrives.
Not since she died, in her sleep,
her quiet laughter escaping.
