If I Told You About The Merlin

If I told you about the Merlin
Who swooped down and perched
Just 7 meters from my opened vision
On a dappled branch of sycamore
Would you know how my heart lurched
To see this princess of glide and power?

To witness soar, the rapid pointed wings
The majesty in circling flight
Is fine enough and pulls the strings
But to have the visitor alight
And preen a moment then survey
The river’s flow, lends legend to the day
Song birds chipped and skylarks baulked
Even the swallowtails froze in place
Lest their twitching wings alert
The fearsome falconry of the “lady hawk”.

When I say how swiftly she then flew
To a higher perch with a better view
I would be wrong not to say how long
The precious moment seemed to me
Wild guardian of the ancient songs
The art and flow between the standing trees
You came and for a moment slowed
All temporality and on your gaze I rode.
