Writer, teacher, and translator, Terry Ehret has published four collections of poetry, most recently Night Sky Journey, and translated two volumes of poems by Mexican poet Ulalume González de León. She is a co-founder of Sixteen Rivers Press, and from 2004-2006 she served as poet laureate of Sonoma County. In the summers, she offers travel programs for writers.

Cathedrals of Air

Because I can’t hear the words 
“cathedral” and “spire” 
without being once again 
outside the village of Fiesole, 
on the cliff’s edge 
high above the Val d’Arno. 
And because the cliff’s face 
sculpts from the wind 
spires of air the birds climb, 
ascending and descending 
in narrowing, widening circles. 
And because my life 
can feel like a dry reservoir 
underneath the earth, 
I am ready to walk the steep, 
stoned-walled road 
above the olive orchards 
coming into fragrant bloom, 
to arrive at this place 
where Leonardo came 
to sketch the flights of birds, 
and to see with his eyes 
the cathedrals of the air, 
their ephemeral geometry, 
their promise of flight.
