What Saved Me

Out of deep loneliness comes
a single ounce of sweetness
to see me through, like sap rising
in winter limbs, just this gift
lifted from an ordinary morning:
a few heart-shaped hoof-prints
of deer pressed into the now-
softening earth no one else
has set foot on in months.
