The Ladle-Maker

The ladle-maker cries out at night 
for someone to make soup 
with roots earth clings to, 
that brings the grit and tang 
of the mother to our mouths. 
Someone who gives hours to the pot, 
sweetening garlic and onions, 
softening barley and beans while 
the hours rain down. An Atlas of recipes 
who knows by smell the beets are roasted, 
by touch the bread is airy, who cherishes 
their portion and ladles out the feast to others.
