Only Time Will Tell

In midlife,
in the days when
I was too busy trying
to conquer life on
all fronts, and when
my elders began
their descents,
did I consider
what my old age
would be like?

No, I never accepted
the reality of
my own demise.
If ever I had an image
of an old me, it was
of a spry and graceful
elder, still working in
a bountiful garden.
A fairy tale.
A dream.

Now that I have
grown old and watch
the middle agers
deep in their own
very busy lives,
now that I have
slowed down and
known the breaking down
of an aging body,
I still see that I want
to conquer life.
But by that, I now mean
that I want to go out
with gratitude and peace,
not fighting death, but rather
open to every moment
until I enter eternity.
Another fairy tale?
Another dream?
Only time
will tell.
