Night Song

I hear it at night, just some nights,

not from radios, not like a
human’s voice.

I first guessed planets,
Venus, Jupitor, maybe Mercury,
yet when each glowed in my
eyes, on dark nights, bright
planetary lights, no melody
or chords heard, no,
not from them.

no angels singing
no devils screaming
no seashore churning
no eagle crying

Perhaps a cresting wave,
humanity’s collective
voice, distilled into a
mass or motet, harmonics of
sobbing, praising, laughing,
springing from air and earth,
heard only by my heart
late at night, some nights.
