What I felt the tree would say, as I walked by it when it was being cut down
I was here.
I saw you arrive.
And I saw your arrive many more times.
You gently brushed me with your joy
and I tried to brush mine onto your sorrows.
I offered you shade in the heat
and fragrance in each new spring.
I did my part.
I held myself high.
I always tended towards the light.
I tried to do it well,
to be a good tree.
Today you cut me down cruelly
with the deafening roar of the chainsaw.
And with the last part that is still alive in me
I tell you:
I hope death is kinder than people.
Yo estaba acá.
Te vi cuando llegaste.
Y te vi llegar muchas veces más.
Me rozaste con tu alegría
y traté de rozarte en tus penas.
Te entregué mi sombra en el calor
y mi fragancia en cada nueva primavera.
Hice lo mío.
Me sostuve alto.
Tendí siempre hacia la luz.
Traté de hacerlo bien,
de ser un buen árbol.
Hoy me cortas cruelmente
con el ensordecedor estruendo de la sierra.
Y con el pedacito vivo de mí
que aún queda te digo:
ojalá la muerte sea más amable que las personas.
