“Ours is not a caravan of despair.” ~ Rumi
The acclaimed Rumi’s Caravan returns to Davis on Saturday March 15. For twenty-five years, Rumi’s Caravan has performed throughout northern California weaving together poems by Rumi, Hafez, Yeats, Mary Oliver, Antonio Machado, Joy Harjo, Rilke, Maya Angelou, Naomi Shihab Nye, David Whyte and others. The improvised poetic conversation with exquisite musical accompaniment moves through moods of prayer and grief to humor and celebration, always highlighting the beauty of the spoken word. The performance is delivered in the oral tradition where poetry is learned by heart, embodied and spoken in community. It is thereby both more approachable and more meaningful to the listener than poetry read from a page. Accompanied by the lyrical music of Matthew Grasso, the group returns after a resounding performance before a standing room only crowd last year.
This performance of Rumi’s Caravan is a benefit for Grace Garden and Empower Yolo. Grace Garden of Davis is an all-volunteer garden raising organic fruits & vegetables for local people experiencing food insecurity. Empower Yolo provides crisis intervention, emergency shelter, confidential counseling, training, legal assistance, and other services for those affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and child abuse.
Rumi's Caravan, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, Saturday March 15th, Veteran's Memorial Theatre, Davis. Doors open at 6:30pm. Suggested donation $20-$40 (cash, check, Venmo) at the door.
