The Chorus Encircles Her

You there inside your skin, don't let them win
If they call breast cancer "breaking up the nest"
go to your wooded hills, gather the grasses
weave us baskets

Listen
Can you hear them?
Ancestors singing you
encircling you
weaving you in their lap

For years you heard our songs
       bowed low; reached high
                trees, grasses, nuts and seeds
                roots, stalks, flowers, leaves

       Come into these hills, child
       choose us, gather us
       roots for your root basket
       Take us home
       We are home

               Wholeness
                   song of being -
                      love this nest
