Where The Future Ends
 
Sometime around sixty
mortality quits being a concept,
turns toward reality
as friends or family begin
one’s personal holocaust,
long or abrupt good-byes.
Loss more common daily.
 
At first, I rant, refuse that reality.
Once freed to accept mourning
as the gift of remaining love,
I see a foreshortened future
that is mine, ask myself:
What do I love,
What do I hope for?
How will I live
that love, that hope
in the time to come?
