California


No matter how many times you start
to write a poem about the fractured
weathered stone that you picked up
near the ocean

it ends up being a poem
about Gaza

You try to write about the stone's texture
and strength

and how words can widen the meaning
of love

Until finally you realize that the stone you
picked up can be joined to another in Gaza

And you write that poem instead
