Falling In Love With A Song

Falling in love with a song
is a lot like falling
in love with a person,

a romance that begins
when a certain song
catches your ear, often one
you’ve never heard of.

It may give you “new ears”
on the first hearing
or just the sense,
that was special.

You may chance to hear it again
a month, a year later.
This time it’s like an old friend.
You become aware
that on your earlier hearing
it seemed to prefigure
a new world.

It begins to haunt you.
You look it up on YouTube.
You search out the lyrics.

It’s always in your head,
having become
a welcome earworm.
an elixir that’s making you
ever more alive!

When you think of it
and sing a few lines aloud
you feel happy, like a long-lost
needed part of yourself
is being added back on.

You decide to learn
to sing and play it,
find the chords
and begin to literally
take it into yourself.

Your life becomes devoted
this previously unimaginable gift
that has entered your world
and made its limits
recede.

The song has become a part of you,
a solid, steady presence
of one of love’s sublime fragrances,
that you are now fully
empowered to share.
