In Mayan Time
in lak’ech, hala ken—“ I am you, and you are me.”
On any ordinary day a romance of sounds—
a tepid rain splatting mud on sandaled feet
step after slow step in Mayan time.
Horns honk, donkeys bray, cathedral bells chime.
Solemn shoppers wander by heaps of market shoes
with rubbery soles and straps
by trinkets this and that…
Aromas of roasting corn and human sweat
of a world steeped in patient labor–
where sustenance lies buried in sunlit soil
there are no drugs there is no crime.
Follow a campesino down the mountain path.
Imperturbable, his shoulders a gentle sway
laden with our nurture.
Let us give thanks for the hands
that harvest the lived ground
of ancient earth near and afar
our neighbors, our planet
yours to behold…
