Chauvet Cave
(for Werner Herzog)
Handprints of red dot
crooked finger
white horse,
bison’s eight legs
signify movement,
so too a rhino’s
multiple tusks and
a spinal column.
Glacial time
sunny cold calcite
ibis skull bones and
bits of golden eagles
carried here by bears
scratching walls white,
hyenas watch noisily
Paleolithic odors
imagined and real
of cave dwellers
envisioned and
everywhere,
small boy with wolf
white calcite eyes upon us
while my own paintings hang
in a Glen Ellen California
little art gallery
next door to a hotel
congruently named
Chauvet.
