Not Getting It
Well we didn’t change our lives
Well we didn’t stop mindless consuming
Well we didn’t listen to our children
whose futures we have eclipsed.
Well we kept denying and blaming
We kept buying and having wars
We kept killing and fighting and lying
and hating and destroying
and building and distracting
Well we did the good we could.
Well we sang songs
protested, proved painfully
with fires and floods,
and the creatures of sea and rivers,
washing up on shores,
that the sky was falling
that waters were rising
that the air was gasping.
Yet, listen,
some came and dared
with defiant love, to push
the pendulum from terror
and despair to resurrection,
and revolution, as a tree breaks
through walls and pavement,
as the right words are finally heard
and walk among us at the right time,
the ancient tree of creation with roots
covering the earth, will flower forth
and not stop until the soil speaks
justice, the river speaks love and forgiveness,
and all beings speak peace.
