First Strike
Imagine the girls.
Wearing backpacks, holding hands, their slender fingers,
heads bent together like summer flowers.
Like children anywhere, like your own.
Imagine girls holding books, pencils in slender fingers,
voices ringing like bells. Their questions, their answers.
Like children everywhere, imagine your own.
Now imagine the bombs.
Voices wailing like sirens, all questions, no answers.
Small bodies and bones buried in rubble.
Now imagine the bombs
ripping heart from soul.
Too many bodies and bones in the rubble,
heads bent over caskets strewn with flowers.
Hearts ripped from souls.
Again, imagine the girls.
