Soundings
		For Michael Franco after reading
			his poem on silence

Oh, articulate silence, you loom large tonight
encompassing those well-hidden secrets
with your clarity of vision, seeing into
the deep soundings beneath the oceans
as the whales give forth song after song
to our unformed ears

what we hear are the melodious songs
of those great beings as they sing
the deep secrets known to our forebears

desecrations to our fractured world
prevent us from understanding
the depth and dark beauty of their songs
but in the echoes of their voices we sense
the truth and heartfelt sounds
that almost speak to us as we listen
to the mermaids in this ocean we call home
