The Toss
 
Will we really trust our future
to the toss of a coin while
heads are rolled and tales are told
foretelling a fortune less sure
than the vein of gold we bleed for?
 
How will this land when the land itself
is up for grabs one claim after another
with war always the short-lived answer
as if working the fields was no longer necessary
as if gold was fine fare for dinner?
 
Will we raise a quick hand
to catch our future midair
seeing without looking
for where our ghosts and our prayers
ask for the next dance?
 
What music will finally capture
our collective attention, thus far only
captive by the weight of the purse
when the real song has been playing
all along in the woods without us?
