Before the cold wind 
captures the day,
before the day 
becomes the red tail of a
disappearing fox,
before I lend myself to the 
dawn of this moment
before awareness rushes into 
the yes and the no
I can alight with the 
white-throated sparrow on 
a top branch crusted with snow 
easing into a watchful moment
as the twig is shaken
the crystals dislodged 
falling silently
to the drifts below
earth shudders in 
acknowledgment
in grief 
in acceptance 
and stilled
silence
