Starry Night
The way dry pine sparks itself escaping
Sierra campfires, my hands warming,
feet cooling, eyes tracking the
rising embers, like stars, moving away.
Since before I remember I
wanted to be closer and closer,
like humans can be. But years pass,
time accelerates, fate speeds toward my
future whether I want it or not.
Odd that the universe is the
opposite.
Its blazing galaxies burn and age,
each star abandons all others, every
night sky now a dark void of neighbors,
the All becomes black holes. But, somehow,
my atoms endure.
