Sometimes I dream about whales - Barry Denny

Sometimes I dream about whales, 
but while sipping a latte, anticipating an omelet
over easy,
I speculate death is an adventure--lofty 
as my planned trip to Iceland.

No, not that I expect to die next week 
or even next year, 
still for an old guy 
these things happen 
sooner rather than later. 

So let me set an intention:
to ponder pain and uncertainty
 with compassion
while aiming high 
for a precious human rebirth.

            ********

But now breakfast is gone,
time is eaten
and I ask my crumbs,
who ‘s that yakking? 

It’s me, posing metaphysical questions
even Buddha does not answer 
and who winces at the removal of a splinter, 
shutting his eyes hard, before an upcoming pinch 
(OW!) from a flu vaccine

But we are all brave,
gazing into distant mirrors,
craving truth,
smirking at distortion.
