We Are The Wine

One of the best reasons to steal away
is to share this perfectly aged wine,
and fall in love
all over again.

Twelve years into the meat of you
and still some distance from the bone,
I’m undaunted by anything you might
employ to resist me.
None of that matters
in the curve of a moonlit spine,
none of that can keep you from the answers
I was born to give.

We know we have everything to lose
so we keep getting better at letting go.
We’re old enough
and wise enough
to love like there’s no tomorrow -
rip the halter off the last mare,
let the wagon wheels fly back to the barn.

We are like this wine
seeds of desire bursting with sun,
we are the sweat of field workers,
the crush between our toes,
we are the calloused hands,
the flowering vines entwined.

We are the time
it takes to age.
We are the harvest.
We are the drunks,
the king and the queen
toasting to love eternal.
We are the last drop -

The empty oak barrel.
