Sometimes I Like To Pray
Before I go out on the road these days
I like to pray. But since I was not raised religious
my prayers are never planned; they are free form.
Sometimes they go like this, thank you tall pine
at the end of my road for still being here.
Sometimes I pray for more food in the winter for
all the birds in my backyard. I pray for the lonely cat
who sits at the edge of the field, watching me drive past
and I pray in the same breath for the moon rising
where I cannot yet see her full form. I pray she makes it
all the way back up into sky to touch rain and that rain
will always smell like someone I have never met
but feel like I have known my entire life.
I like to pray for people passing me in the street
who are looking down, so that perhaps someday
they will look up and see the clouds exploding with sunlight
and feel warm.
