in the chill
no angels watch
a lonely human
trying to return
the apple to the tree

it's a noble struggle
fidgety with detail
arrogance and sweep
neurons grasp for meaning
reach to gentle the edges

it's a time before ticking
before mind's overstocked pantry
ponders impermanence and contingency 
learns the inevitable dissolution 
of all living things

is this holy moment of now
meant only to humble and hobble
a passing dream illusion
of unknowable preassigned destiny 

in a fallen world
there is only longing
an undimishable wish 
to return to the garden
