Penelope’s Dream
Penelope, patient
weaver of wisdom
dreams of a land
where no one waits
and no one is left,
where lovers fume
with lust and fury.
In her dream
Penelope dismantles
her loom, the precious
palette of her daily life.
She packs a bag with
swords and scythes.
Into a pouch she tucks
a single, scintillating
crescent moon.
Across the wine-dark sea
she sails, swooning
for her trickster husband
to the haunting
songs of the sirens.
Penelope arrives
where looms and sails
live side by side,
where Odysseus shares
his feather bed with his
now wild bride.
As she awakens from her
buoyant dream, alone
once again in Ithaca,
dawn sits in the distant sky.
Preparing her daily loom
She finds woven into the
wool of white and green,
a small, sparkling
crescent moon.
