Water Dreams

The water takes me in
like a homecoming.
I lengthen my body
into its silky body,
and wonder where
it has been before
arriving here.
Does water dream?
Does it remember
places it has visited
in its long travels
from sky to earth,
from earth to cloud?

Perhaps it has rested
in an oasis, in sand
carved out like a cup
and surrounded by
date palms waving
overhead, waiting for
visits by solitary desert
wanderers or bright
caravans laden with
salt and jewel-toned silks,
wafting aromas of tea
and cinnamon.

Or maybe it was once
drawn up from a
quiet alpine lake
after reflecting
fat cumulus clouds,
dazzling sunlight and
pale moonbeams.
Or has it been part of
a raucous little stream,
bounding over boulders
on its way to the sea?

Is it disappointed now
at having been pumped
into this urban indoor pool?
Does it dream of all
the places it has been
before?

Whatever its story,
it is here now, offering
its welcome to
those who enter it.
Water, wherever you go,
whatever you dream
or don't, I welcome you
as you welcome me.
