MSc Opportunity in Bee Ecology
MSc in Applied Science at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia,
Canada. Partial funding will be from the Wildlife Division, Department of
Environment and Conservation, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The native bee fauna of Newfoundland has not been well documented. It is
important that an up-to-date species list is produced so that we will be
prepared to make important decisions in the future on the effects of climate change
and the introduction of non-native bee species. In the past 20 years many
non-native bee species have been imported in the agricultural sector to
enhance crop pollination. It is unclear if these species became established here
or what their impact is on the native bee fauna. The project will involve
comprehensive sampling from the major areas of the province. In addition,
extensive sampling will occur in areas where non-native species have been used in
the past.

The suitable candidate will have a BSc (Honours) in biology with course work
in entomology and ecology, or equivalent research experience. The successful
candidate must be able to split his/her time between research labs in Nova
Scotia and Newfoundland.

The project will be co-supervised by Dr Barry Hicks (College of the North
Atlantic, Carbonear, Newfoundland) and Dr Doug Strongman (SMU) with the field
work occurring in Newfoundland.

The proposed start date is May 1, 2009. Interested candidates should send a
current transcript and a letter describing their research interests to:
