Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) has just released a
first-of-its-kind, step-by-step, full-color guide for rearing and managing
bumble bees, mason bees, leafcutter bees, and other alternatives to honey
bee pollinators.

The book was written by Eric Mader, Xerces Society National Outreach
Coordinator; Marla Spivak, Professor of Apiculture and Social Insects,
University of Minnesota, Department of Entomology; and Elaine Evans, Xerces
Society Conservation Consultant and author of *Befriending Bumble Bees*.

This new book provides all of the information people will need to rear
alternative pollinators, including leafcutter bees, mason bees, and bumble
bees, said lead author Eric Mader. We hope this will encourage the rearing
of local pollinators, so people can avoid moving species outside their
native ranges.

Whether you are a grower, beekeeper, bee enthusiast, or conservation
practitioner this book provides clear easy to use information to start
rearing and managing native bees. It includes:

   -

Detailed information on each alternative pollinator's biology and
susceptibility to disease, pests, and chemicals.
    -

Step-by-step instructions on how to rear and manage alternative
   pollinators.
    -

Nest construction details, and parasite and disease management guidelines
    -

Easy-to-understand accounts of the honey bee's plight and what is being
done to breed healthier honey bees.
    -

What can be done to protect pollinators and our food systems.
    -

Information on matching pollinators to crops, and deciding how best to
pollinate for successful agricultural production and pollinator protection.
    -

Guidance for understanding the business of pollination (including a
   sample pollination contract
    -

A bibliography and list of additional resources

The book is illustrated with more than 130 color photos.
