Hello,

There is great pollinator conservation work going on in California. Thanks
to the California NRCS, the Lockeford NRCS Plant Materials Center, and the
University of California Davis for their collaboration on this pollinator
demonstration habitat.

Best,

Mace

Mild weather and a great agenda set the stage for an excellent day of
training during the Lockeford Plant Materials Center (PMC) Open House Field
Day on April 24. About 48 NRCS staff, partners and others attended the
gathering at the newly rejuvenated PMC that's seen multiple improvements
under Margaret Smither-Kooperl's leadership.

After a brief welcoming from STC Ed Burton, two groups were formed to tour
the grounds. The facilities tour, led by Smither-Kooperl and Biological
Technician Amy Gomes, included stops at the main building, greenhouse and
seed building. One interesting plant under propagation in the greenhouse is
Tahoe yellow cress, a member to the mustard family unique to Lake Tahoe that
nearly faced extinction in the 1990s. Thanks to many conservation partners,
the little plant with yellow flowers has a renewed chance for survival.

On the walking tour of the fields, Smither-Kooperl and Jessa Guisse,
pollinator habitat specialist with Xerces Society, gave presentations at the
pollinator hedgerows and meadows. The hedgerows were magnificently in full
bloom in several locations, showing their maturity as one in particular is
now over three-years old. A later stop at the Peoples Garden was too early
in the season to be impressive. But based on having produced 671 pounds for
a local food bank last year, the garden has the potential for another
bountiful year.

PMC Agronomist Jeremiah Mann led the second, motorized tour that some
participants dubbed the "hay ride" because of the bales of hay one sat on
atop a flatbed truck and trailer. Mann's tour made stops at the irrigation
system, cover crop demonstrations and Camelina Trial.

"This is really a celebration of having our new irrigation system. I've had
so much support from the State and the Plant Materials Program in letting us
put the system in," said Smither-Kooperl. "We're planning on doing more
training here in the future, and I'm looking forward to that."

Along with the efforts of the PMC staff, volunteers and others, including
Dennis Frommelt, Shawn Vue, Mathew Bronson and Walter Clevenger, the event
was co-sponsored by the Placer County RCD and San Joaquin County RCD.
