AGRICULTURE: Honey substitutes may contribute to bee colony losses
(Wednesday, June 5, 2013)

Beekeepers' practice of feeding bees honey substitutes may have played a
role in colony collapse by denying the insects substances that bolster their
immune systems, according to a new study.

Bees normally consume their own honey, which contains compounds like
p-coumaric acid that seem to help bees detoxify and increase their defenses
to disease, according to the study released this week by scientists at the
University of Illinois.

Beekeepers, however, commonly feed the bees honey substitutes such as sugar
or high-fructose corn syrup and harvest and sell the honey that bees
produce.

"The widespread apicultural use of honey substitutes, including
high-fructose corn syrup, may thus compromise the ability of honeybees to
cope with pesticides and pathogens and contribute to colony losses," the
study said (
