PAm-Sponsored Research Causes a Stir
Ever-trying to back speculation with scientific data, Project Apis m.
funded Dr. Reed Johnson, Ohio State University, to look at the impact of
Pristine on queen rearing. Purely by providence, Dr. Johnson chose Dimilin
(diflubenzuron) an insect growth regulator (IGR), as the positive control.
Turns out Dimilin appears to have had an impact on queen bee larval
development. Read more from PAm's scientific advisor, Dr. Eric Mussen, UCD

Honey Bees Come Up Short...
But Will Almonds?

Dear Laurie,

The word has spread up and down the almond rows of California. There has
been a shortage of honey bees to pollinate the 2013 crop. Almond growers
are speaking out. Beekeepers are speaking out. Numerous news outlets
are reporting on the bee shortage. Consider the challenges commercial
beekeepers have to face. Last summer's drought, the lack of timely EPA approved
mite control products, pesticides, state border delays, the continued loss
of natural habitat and subsequent lack of forage resources, mid-west CRP
lands being taken out of conservation and conversely, the increased almond
acreage in California.

It's not just the almond crop - honey bees pollinate 90 specialty crops in
California alone. From there beekeepers traverse the U.S. supplying honey
bees that will pollinate 1 out of 3 bites we consume. Beekeepers are a
resilient supplier in the food production chain. They are as industrious
and hard-working as the bees that they provide.

PAm helps beekeepers be a dependable partner to the grower. Now more
than ever, we need to concentrate on our research priorities and on building
honey bee nutrition and habitat. It is vital we develop honey bee forage
resources. Well-fed bees will live longer, over-winter better, and result
in a greater supply of bees for crop pollination.

PAm will host a 'Seeds
for Bees' event on Friday, April 26th at 1:30 in the afternoon. It will
'bee' held at Capay Ranch near Hamilton City, CA.

The field day will showcase blooming fields of rapini (Brassica),
clovers, vetch, alyssum, phacelia, and a mix of native wildflowers. All are an
excellent nutritional source for honey bees. Come learn how the soil is
prepped, equipment used, bloom emergence/duration and more. Of course,
there will be honey bee hives on location! This is a great opportunity to
meet participants in the 'Seeds for Bees' project. Forage outreach
materials, including seed packets, will be available for you to take home. Don't
miss this event! To help us plan, please RSVP at _ProjectApis at gmail.com_
(mailto:Projectapis at gmail.com) by April 12th. Thank you!
