*NAPPC PRESENTS THE *
*2016 POLLINATOR ROADSIDE MANAGEMENT AWARD*
*San Francisco, August 31, 2016* –The 2016 North American Pollinator
Protection Campaign (NAPPC) Pollinator Roadside Management Award was
presented at the National Roadside Vegetation Management Association’s
annual conference in Franklin, Tennessee. NAPPC is administered by the
Pollinator Partnership (P2) and P2’s Executive Director, Laurie Davies
Adams, was present to acknowledge the awardees.
The NAPPC Pollinator Roadside Management Award to recognize transportation
agencies who are leading the field in pollinator-friendly roadside
practices. By implementing pollinator-friendly roadside practices, roadside
managers can play a significant role in boosting pollinator habitat
nationwide, including habitat for the imperiled monarch butterfly.
Nominations were reviewed by a distinguished selection committee comprised
of Julie Zahniser (American Bee Project), Deirdre Remley (Federal Highways
Administration), Neil Pedersen (Transportation Research Board), and Laurie
Davies Adams (Pollinator Partnership). 2017 nominations are now being
accepted; visit http://www.pollinator.org/roadsides for more information
and the nomination form.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) received first
place. In the past 14 years, Georgia DOT has planted approximately 2,700
acres of roadside wildflowers statewide utilizing proceeds from the sales
of wildflower-themed vehicle license plates.
Johnson County Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) received
second place. Johnson Country IRVM has planted over 350 acres of high
quality pollinator habitat over the last 25 years. Additionally, Johnson
Country IRVM has implemented mowing and pesticide use policies that
incorporate the needs of pollinators.
The Ohio Department of Transportation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s
Leavenworth Fish Hatchery both received honorable mention for their efforts
and emerging pollinator programs.
