Hello all,
We're beginning to quality check and tally the Xerces Society's Western
Monarch Count (WMC) <https://westernmonarchcount.org/> early-season count
data (overwintering monarch count surveys conducted between Oct 19 – Nov 3,
2024), and I wanted to send out a quick reminder to *submit your monarch
count data * <https://westernmonarchcount.org/submit-your-data/>as soon as
possible! *The deadline to submit your early-season count data is next
Wednesday, November 13th. *
You can enter data here: https://westernmonarchcount.org/submit-your-data/
<https://westernmonarchcount.org/submit-your-data/>
We knew numbers would be small this year and we're still waiting on some
count data, but so far only a handful of monarch overwintering sites have
reported cluster counts in the low thousands. Yikes! So far, the high count
at Pacific Grove Butterfly Sanctuary in Monterey, CA, is 18 monarchs
(11/1/24), and no clusters have been observed yet. Of the submitted
early-season count data (lots more to come) Natural Bridges has the highest
count with 2,152 butterflies observed, and Lighthouse Field comes in second
with a high count of 1,078 butterflies. Fingers crossed for a slight uptick
during the mid-season count, which will occur Nov 16 – Dec 8, 2024.
A huge thanks to all of the community scientists, conservation partners,
local experts and funders who make this annual count of overwintering
western monarchs possible. We welcome you to visit WesternMonarchCount.org
for more information on the WMC initiative.
Take care, 🦋
Isis
