1/8/10

Greetings for the new year,

In early December we saw several nights of extreme cold (for us)
with temperatures dropping below 18 F. This decimated all hope for
Brugmansia flowers (which always come late for us, if at all),
damaged the tender tips of some of the Trichocereus and caused
damage to seedlings of some of our Andean collections in the cold
house. It’s always interesting to see which plants have true
hardiness here and which are more tender than we thought.
The weather since then has been fairly mild, with intermittent rain
and sun. It has been a fantastic season for edible mushrooms in
northern California, a bounty of chantrelles, shrimps, oysters,
Amanitas, etc. Now that we have swung through another Solstice the
daylight hours are slowly increasing, though January and February
usually feel the darkest and wettest of the year. We will spend
this time mulching, planting trees, cleaning the last of the years
seed harvests, and planning our Spring trip to the Andes.
In fact if you’re interested in joining us for this years Andean
expedition, email me and i’ll let you know as soon as we have
dates, cost, and itinerary.

If you have seed that needs cold stratification, now is still an
excellent time to sow outdoors for Spring germination. We plant
most of such seed between November and late January in seed “cages”
that break up the heavy rains and protect the seeds from any number
of local predators that include mice, voles, woodrats, and a
spectrum of birds.

The new illustrated catalog is finally completed (for the 2nd time
in 2 months!) and has been mailed out. If you are not on our
physical mailing list and would like to receive it, send $2 ($4
foreign) to our PO Box.

The website has been just been updated, listing a bit over half of
what’s in the new catalog. There is also a new page on cultivation
information and a printable order form in PDF format. We should
also finally have some photos posted in the coming weeks, so check
back soon.
Thanks again to Mara for the website work.
