Fluttering towards autumn. The Ariocarpus have been pushing up their 
blooms and Trichocereus fruit are ripening on the stalk. The garden?s 
bounty is peaking and a plethora of seed is ready for harvest. We find 
ourselves with endless tasks requesting attention, so we will keep this 
one short!

Allium caeruleum Holubec
Liliaceae. Onion bulb with stalks to 2', spherical umbels of sky blue 
flowers. Forms abundant bulbils amongst the flowers. Holubec collection, 
foothills of Zailiski Ala Tau, Kazakhstan, 4600'. One of the  few truly 
blue flowered onions. The bulbils can be eaten or used for continual 
propagation. Does best  with sun and a dry summer rest. Z4?    Packet of

Begonia baumanii BK10509.8 ?Killu-killu? ?Graniso t?ika?
Begoniaceae. Medium size tuber with beautiful round crinkled leaves to 6" 
diameter. Large rose colored flowers on 2' stalks. Growing on rock 
outcrops above the ruins of Inkallajta, Cochabamba Dept., Bolivia. This 
lovely endemic is reported to be used in rain rituals. The tubers are 
chopped and used to curdle milk for making cheese, said to impart an 
interesting flavor. This species favors succulent or rock garden culture 
in captivity. The caudex like tuber will appeal to the lover of fat 
bulbous appendages on plants. New to cultivation! Z8/9?     Plant 1+ year

Cheilanthes bonariensis BK10426.3
Pteridaceae. Attractive xerophytic fern with erect grey to silver blue 
fuzzy leaves to 6"+. Growing on rocks, descent from Pumamarca, Cusco 
Dept., Peru, 10,800'. May be chewed like coca leaf, other Cheilanthes and 
Polypodium ferns have been reported as coca substitutes. These rock ferns 
can be grown like succulents and are drought tolerant, the fronds curling

Gaultheria wardii ?Xi Zang Bai Zhu?
Ericaceae. Elegant shrub, arching branches to 2', dark green ovate leaves 
covered in a red-brown fuzz. White pink flowers and edible creamy blue 
berries. Forest margins of China/India, up to 9000'+. Distinct and unusual 
wintergreen relative. Well drained moist acid soil and sun to part shade.

Nicotiana tomentosiformis  ?Wild Tobacco?
Rare perennial species with leafy upright stalks to 10'. Large mouthed 
dark pink flowers. As the name suggests, it resembles N. tomentosa but 
never reaches the size of that arborescent species. Endemic to the Yungas 
region of Bolivia. Genetic studies suggest it may be one of the parent 
species of the cultivated tobacco (N. tabacum), being hybridized millennia 
ago with N. sylvestris and N. otophora. Z9b/10a        Seed packet $4.50

Thymus brachychilus
Labiatae.Dwarf cushion plant 1?3" high. Densely arranged, aromatic, hairy, 
dark green leaves. Clusters of purple and pink flowers loved by bees. 
Pavelka collection, limestone ridges, Ak Dag, Turkey, 6300'. This rare 
thyme is a great rock garden plant or aromatic/culinary groundcover. Sun, 
mineral soil and protection from excessive Winter rain. Z7?     Plant 1

Trichocereus bridgesii fma. monstrosus-cristata cl. B 
A few years ago an unusual growth of crested tissue appeared on a specimen 
of this already monstrose plant. Mostly spineless blue-green tissue in 
thin or rounded ridges, sometimes resembling a cresting wave. Last year we 
posted a photo on the website and have gotten continual requests for the 
plant. We offer a very limited number of rooted cuttings for the very 
first time. Get one while you can.       3"+ rooted cuttings $45 (limited)

Trichocereus sp. Hutchinson et al (BBG 64.0762)
Upright stems to 8'+ tall and 6" in diameter. 5?9 fat ribs and miniature 
spines. Sweet night blooming white flowers. A really gorgeous San Pedro 
that is most likely simply a distinct clone of wild T. pachanoi. 
Originally collected above 8,000' by P. Hutchinson and J.K. Wright & R.M. 
Straw in the Canyon Rio Maranon above Chagual, just below Aricapampa, 
Huamachuco Prov., La Libertad Dept., Peru.          6"+ cutting $16
