Aceraceae. An elegant maple to 15?40'. Green bark, 5?7 lobed deep-green 
leaves, new foliage is a bronzy red, turning yellow to bright red in the

10,000', Annapurna, Nepal. Traditionally coppiced for fodder. A lovely

Anadenanthera colubrina v. cebil La Paz ?Vilca? 
Fabaceae. Tree 10?30'+ tall. Feathery pinnate leaves. Large flat seedpods 
to 10" long, round shiny seed. Seed purchased from a street vendor in the 
Witches? Market, La Paz, Bolivia. The dominant tree in much of the nearby 
Yungas dryland forests where the seed was originally harvested. Once one 
of the most important religious plants throughout the Andes, playing a 
central role in the spread of the Tiwanaku culture. Drought tolerant.

Asteraceae. Dense groundcover that forms green mats to 1" high and 3' 
wide. Waxy leaves, small white flowers. Exposed altiplano, near the ruins 
of Tiwanaku, Bolivia, 13,000'. We were told the plant is endangered. Grows 
to about 2?3"+ tall in cultivation, well draining mineral soil and sun.

Berberis sp. CC5712  ?Chutro? ?Himalayan Barberry?
Berberidaceae. Spiny shrub. Bright green rounded to ovate leaves with 
reddish prickles along the margins and whitish undersides. Flowers not yet 
seen, likely yellow or orange. Red fruit. Til Jung Rai collection for 
Chadwell, Langtang, Nepal, near 11,000'. Throughout the region the tart 
barberry fruit are eaten fresh or pickled, the roots used as a yellow dye 
and the whole plant for a broad array of medicinal applications. Rich in

Betulaceae. A gorgeous medium sized birch tree 20?35' tall. Exceptional 
gold and copper peeling bark. The leaves turn a rich yellow and defoliate 
in Autumn. From seed collected by Chadwell at 12,500' Langtang, Nepal, 
just south of the Tibetan border. An important tree, the bark is used for 
wound healing and as a carminative. In India the resin is reportededly 
contraceptive. Widely used for construction, the tree is now considered 
endangered in some regions due to deforestation. Easy to grow, does well 
in most soils. Z7a

Blechnum cycadifolium  ?Juan Fernandez Tree Fern?
Blechnaceae. A gorgeous tree fern with a thick erect trunk to 6'+. Crowned 
with a rosette of stiff cycad-like leaves. Endemic to Robinson Crusoe and 
Alejandro Selkirk Islands where it can form dense, otherworldly forests. 
Needs a moist, rich, well draining soil. Z9a?

Boenninghausena albiflora CC7147  ?Dampate?
Rutaceae. Delicate shrub to 4' high. Soft blue-green leaves with pinnate 
rounded leaflets. Feathery white flowers. Chadwell seed collection, 
forests of northwest Himalaya, 7500'. The plant is rich in oils and has an 
interesting pungent sweet scent when crushed. Used externally for all 
manner of wound healing, as an insecticide and to treat malaria. Dried 
leaf powder is used as a flea repellant. Grow in light shade, moist soil.

Buddleja coriacea BK08528.1 ?Colle? ?Puna Kiswar?
Buddlejaceae. Of all the Buddleja, this species is undoubtedly the 
matriarch, the resplendent queen. Rounded bush or tree 8 to 30'. Stems 
densely packed with small leathery leaves, shiny on top, white underneath. 
Rounded clusters of pale orange to red flowers adorn the ends of the 
branches. From a distance it looks like an olive tree. Seed from near the 
ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, Bolivia, over 13,000'. One of the few trees 
that is hardy up to 15,000'+, and a key species of the now mostly extinct 
highland Andean forest. Widely planted by the Inca and increasingly 
planted in the Andes for its beauty and many uses, though unknown in other 
parts of the world. Seems adaptable to low elevations. Made into a tea for 
flu and coughs, pneumonia, photosensitivity, stomach ailments, and utero 
tonic. An important dye plant. Drought tolerant and hardy to Z5b?6b if 
kept relatively dry.

Bursera fagaroides ?Copal?
Burseraceae. A really wonderful plant. Shrub or small tree to 20'. Thick 
swollen trunks and limbs with smooth golden bark that exfoliates in thin 
papery sheets. Pinnate leaves. Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts of Mexico. 
The sap is the most common source of Copal, highly aromatic with a sweet 
citrus like scent. Z10a

Casuarina torulosa (= Allocasuarina torulosa) ?Forest She-Oak?
Casuarinaceae. Bizarre tree to 50', often smaller. Brown corky fissured 
bark and sprays of very fine, descending, needle-like leaves that take on 
a beautiful coppery-purple color. Yellow orange flowers and small warty 
cones that remind us of toads. Native to Australia. A gorgeous and useful 
plant that deserves wider cultivation. Nitrogen fixing and good for 
building soils. Makes an excellent windbreak. Low maintenence and grows 
quickly, even in poor soils. Z9a

Fabaceae. Dioecious tree to 30'+. Pinnate leaves and yellowish flowers. 
6?8"+ long, thick edible seed pods. A nutritious ancient food crop. Seed 
from extra large and sweet pods T. Baldwin selected from the markets of 
Vienna, from trees grown in the Middle East. Drought resistant. We offer

Coriaria ruscifolia ?Chile?  ?Deu?  
Coriariaceae. Monotypic genus. Shrub to 6'. Arching or pendent branches 
lined with oval leaflets give the plant a unique fern-like appearance. 
Hanging clusters of small flowers transform into necklaces of dark purple 
fruits. Mid elevations of western South America. The berries of closely 
related species (now considered synonymous by some) Coriaria thymifolia, 
are considered a magical fruit in Ecuador and are said to give one the 
feeling of flight when eaten. The plant including the berries are thought 
to be toxic so care should be taken to educate visitors not to eat the 
berries. The roots host bacteria that fix nitrogen in the soil. A unique 
highly ornamental plant. Distinct from collections we?ve made in Peru, 
having larger leaflets and dark green stems. Z9b

Winteraceae. Miniature evergreen ?tree? to 3?5'+ tall. Lanceolate green 
leaves with powdery bluish-white undersides. Clusters of sweetly fragrant 
star shaped white blossoms. Blackish berries. Has a spicy aroma when 
crushed. A dwarf found in the mid elevations of central Chile, its close 
kin may reach 50' in height. Drimys are held sacred by the Mapuche people 
and are central to many of their shamanic ceremonies. Many medicinal uses, 
tea being highly regarded for stomach complaints. Sun to part shade, rich

Rosaceae. Evergreen shrub 8?15' tall. Oblong 2" leaves and axillary 
clusters of white flowers. Unusual star shaped woody seed capsule. Chilean 
endemic. Kageneckia species are important members of the Andean forests 
and dry scrub. The tough hard wood is used for tool making. Contains 
antioxidant, analgesic and antiinflammatory compounds. A handsome

Myrtaceae. Highly ornamental evergreen shrub or tree, from 5?30'+. Smooth 
red and brown mottled bark, dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers. 
1/2" edible black berries, sweet with a slight aromatic aftertone. Native 
to Chile and southwest Argentina. Extremely generous with blossoms and 
fruit. Fruit is traditionally eaten fresh and made into a chicha, we find 
it makes an excellent preserve or cordial. Sun to part shade. Drought

Berberidaceae. Evergreen shrub 2?5'+. Large compound leaves with stiff, 
pointed leaflets, bluish-purple to dark green, powdery white underneath. 
Sprays of small purple and yellow flowers followed by bluish fruit, edible 
but tart. Rare species endemic to shady, moist limestone cliffs, Emei 
Shan, Sichuan, China. Rich in medicinal alkaloids like other species. A

Podocarpaceae. Upright evergreen coniferous tree 15?30'+ tall. Exquisite 
drooping branches and long flattened linear leaves. Reportedly edible, red 
berry-like fruit when male and female trees are present. One of several 
rare Andean conifer species endangered by habitat loss. Endemic to the 
cool Nothofagus rainforests of central Chile. High quality wood. Does well 
in cultivation, prefers moderately moist soil and sun to filtered shade.

Rosaceae. Oak-like tree 25?60' with dark brown bark, evergreen oval leaves 
and dense corymbs of showy white flowers. The inner bark is rich in 
saponins and is powdered and made into an excellent soap. Occurs up to 
6,500? in Chile and Peru. It has a long history as an effective medicine 
for lung conditions and as an immunostimulant. It also has many industrial 
uses in cosmetics and food products. Said to attract beneficial insects 
such as ladybugs. Adaptable to dry areas, being a good candidate for 
reforestation in arid regions. A lovely and versatile tree. Z7b

Solanaceae. 5'+ shrub with showy 1" tubular flowers that start yellow and 
transform to burnt orange  over many days. Collected by Neil Logan, 
Vilcabamba, Ecuador, 5500'. A bath of the plant is used for fright. Has 
great horticultural potential. Grow like Brugmansia. Z9b

Ugni selkirkii?  ?Juan Fernandez Guava?
Myrtaceae. Evergreen shrub to 7'+. Rounded leaves densely arranged along 
the stems. Small white flowers and white/pink edible berries. Extremely 
rare, endemic to the Juan Fernandez Archipelago where it faces extinction 
from habitat loss. The seed collector was not totally sure of the 
identification, it is possible that it?s crossed with U. molinae which was 
introduced to the islands. However, the seedlings do appear distinct from 
U. molinae. A superb rarity for the edible/ornamental garden. Sun to part 
shade. Z8b/9a?

Ericaceae. Evergreen shrub with arching branches, 6?12' tall. Large

of the eastern Himalayas, up to 9,000'. An elegant and rarely cultivated
