12/15/14

Greetings,

Yes, there has been something of a temporal chasm between emails. The
multitudinous demands of the ever diversifying nursery and chasing after
my daughters Kiera (2 this coming January) and Ember (3 in February) have
left me no time for digital distractions or much else.
With the slower pace of winter I should have time to devote to varied
computer updates and writing projects over the next few months....

We’re experiencing a much needed deluge of rain and otherwise mild
temperatures. We’ve yet to experience single frost--which is a first for
this usually chilly time of year. We’ve been harvesting a bounty of seeds
that are usually lost to frost before ripening and the Andean tubers are
exceedingly happy--we don’t expect to have them available as bareroot for
another couple weeks--live plants are still ready to ship at this time.

We have added medley of new species to the website since summer-- a few
are listed this email and you’ll find more if you take time to peruse the
website.
See below for a superb selection of plants and books on sale until the
year’s end.

Saturnalian blessings to all,
~ Ben

branches, flaking silvery bark. Green to bluish imparipinnate leaves
densely crowded at the branch ends. New growth is red-bronze. Clusters of
small cream colored flowers. Endemic to the limestone escarpment dry
forests of western central Socotra. The dried resin is much esteemed and
used ceremonially in Socotra. Soil with 50-75% pumice, bright light, heat
and a winter rest are needed to keep this plant thriving. Great for
bonsai. Rooted cuts. 10b
6–10"+ plant $38 (very limited)

Boswellia elongata “Frankincense”
Deciduous pachycaul tree. Thick swollen branches, peeling yellowish bark.
8–14" long slender leaves, simple when young turning pinnate with age,
dark green to purple-gray with pale undersides. New growth has an
intricate lacy texture like a spiderweb. White flowers. Arid forests of
northern Socotra. Aromatic sap often forms beads along the trunk making
for easy harvest. A favorite of the rare frankincense. Grow like other
Boswellia. Rooted cuts. 10b
8–12"+ plant $38 (very limited)

Cavendishia capitulata HBG92102
Ericaceae. Multibranched shrublet 1–3'+ high with a thickened stem base to
6" diameter. Small obovate leaves, new growth bronze. Flower clusters with
reddish bracts and 3–6 tubular purplish flowers with white tips. Round
berries. Often occurs as an epiphyte, wet tropical forests and
cloudforests of Costa Rica, Panama and Columbia up to 9000'. One of the
most endearing and diminutive Cavendishia, no less lovely for its size.
Rooted cuttings. Z9b?
Plant $22.50 (limited)

Ceratonia oreothauma DH07041 “Oman Carob” “Tiyu”
Fabaceae. Dioecious tree 15–25'+. Thick gray-brown fissured bark.

flowers with reddish anthers/stigmas. 2–4" long pods. Dylan Hannon seed
collection, Jabal/Buni Habir, Oman, 5300'. Endemic to the eastern Al Hajar
Mountains of Oman. Pods and foliage are used as goat fodder. Thought to be
the wild ancestor of carob and may prove useful for breeding with standard
Carob tree. Z10a?
6"+ plants 1+ years old $22.50 (limited)

Commiphora simplicifolia “Madgascar Myrrh”
Burseraceae. Small thorny tree with thickened caudiciform trunk. Gray to
golden peeling bark and simple leaves. Highly aromatic. Madagascar
endemic. Beautiful rare species that does well in cultivation. Rooted cuts
from seed grown clones. Z10b
6–12"+ branched plant $18 (limited)

Hechtia sp. ‘Miahuatlan’
Bromeliaceae. Rosettes of thick, stiff, dark green leaves dusted with tiny
silver scales. Large marginal thorns. Seed from Miahuatlan, Oaxaca,
Mexico. We’ll have to until the plants bloom to get a clear ID. Sun, heat
and drought hardy. Z9b/10a?
3–4"+ plant 2 years old $7.50 or 3 for $19

Ipomoea longituba “Enchilewa”
An upright to sprawling pachycaul morning glory. Whitish stems to 3' high
and caudex to 6"+ wide with several additional tubers formed to 18" long
below ground. Ovate to heart shaped green-gray leaves. Large white flowers
with a long tubular corolla. Native to southern Africa. In Kenya the
tubers are eaten raw, said to have a sweet taste, also roasted or boiled
and used in veterinary medicine. Drought hardy, deciduous when dry. Z10a
Plant 2–3 years old $13.50

Mirabilis expansa ‘Seedling’ “Mauka”
These are 8+ month old seedlings from crossing 2 ‘Blanca’ varieties. The
plants have white to yellow stems and leaf veins which should reflect root
color. This is the rarest, least understood of the Andean tubers, known to
science since the 1960s. Only known from 3 disparate locations- north of
La Paz, Bolivia, near Cajamarca, Peru and the highlands of Pichincha &
Cotopaxi, Ecuador. This is most likely the result of the Incan policy of
mitma; relocating entire ethnic groups throughout the Andes. Mauka’s
tubers are protein rich and high in calcium, phosphorous and potassium.
Much still needs to be discovered about the cultural needs of the plant
but it seems somewhat tolerant of both wet and dry conditions. Should be
cold hardy to at least Z8 and likely Z7 if well mulched.
Plant $26 each (Limit 3 per customer)

Sedum andinum GP1642
Crassulaceae. Tufts of tiny succulent stems 1–3" tall. Spirally arranged,
spherical, chubby, green leaves clothe the stems, turning reddish-brown in
full sun. Small terminal flowers, red with white stripes. This is the
neotype: Pino’s collection from rocky slopes near the town of Chicla,
Huarochiri Prov., Lima Dept., Peru, 12,300'. A delightful miniature Sedum
new to cultivation. Rooted cuttings. Z8b? 2" plant $9.50

Smallanthus sonchifolius ‘Morado’ (=Polymnia sonchifolia) “Purple Yacon”
Asteraceae. This may be the variety originally introduced by Oregon
Exotics as “Purple Puma”. Fat juicy tubers with a purple skin and
purple-violet infused flesh, surely rich in anthocyanins. Hardy to Z7b or
8a if well mulched.
Plant $17.50 (Limit 1 per customer)

Solanum ochranthum BK14513.29 (=Lycopersicon ochranthum)
Large woody vine to 20'+. Imparipinnate leaves to 12"+ long. Branched
inflorescence with up to 30+ golden-yellow flowers. Clusters of round
green fruit 2"+ diameter with a thick, hard skin. Cloud forest near
Choquequirao, 9700'. Recorded from Columbia to Cusco, Peru, this wide
range suggests ancient anthropogenic dispersal. Thought to be of potential
use in tomato breeding for insect and disease resistance and as a robust
grafting stock. Z9?
5 seed $4 / 12–18"+ seedling $14

Themistoclesia alata HBG95935 “Imdeill”
Ericaceae. Subshrub to 3', erect or pendent branches arising from
caudex-like lignotubers. Obovate leaves and tiny red flowers. Showy, deep
lavender colored, 4 angled edible berries are produced in abundance

ANCIENT AGRICULTURE: Roots & Application of Sustainable Farming
by Gabriel Alonso de Herrera compiled by Juan Estevan Arellano
This is the first translation of Obra de Agricultura, originally published
in 1513 as an instruction manual for farmers in central Spain. The
influence of this excellent treatise eventually spread throughout Europe
and the New World regions of the southwestern U.S., Central and South
America. Much of the information in the book is highly relevant for
sustainable agricultural practices today, from the backyard garden to
large scale organic farms. Many traditional crops are discussed as well as
soil improvement, harmonizing working the land with natural cycles and
astrological influences, and the proper use of irrigation ditches.
Essential for anyone interested in sustainable agriculture.
Hardcover, illustrated, 168 pages sale price $13.50 (normally $25 ) (2
lbs)
