Greetings,
It has been a full summer. We’ve had an unusually long growing season with
our lack of a real winter last year. The cacti and other succulents are
thriving though some of the less xerophytic plants are beginning to lag
with the long, hot drought California is experiencing. Thankfully the land
we inhabit is blessed with a very abundant spring and we have plenty of
water. The Trichocereus cacti have been exuberant in their blossoming this
summer and we will have seed of new hybrids available this fall.
We will be making a 2 week expedition to southern Bolivia and northern
Argentina at the beginning of October to continue our taxonomical and
ethnobotanical studies of Trichocereus and aid ethnobotanist Neil Logan
with his Prosopis work. Details of our travel will be posted soon.
Work on a new, illustrated Sacred Succulents catalog has been full of
stops and starts, diversions and technological conundrums. Care and
propagation of a cornucopia of unusual and wonderful plants from remote
and immediate regions of our lush planet always comes first. We continue
to strive toward maximizing biodiversity in our gardens and offerings. The
reality of this means that we rarely have any of the long hours needed in
front of the computer to fully complete a catalog of our high standards.
We are still pecking away at it but for now we offer you the attached
pdf’s of our complete listings. These lists of nearly 1000 species is much
more extensive than the website. Some of the plants listed are only
available in very limited quantities and will not make it to the final
catalog. I know many of you are eager for the illustrated version and I
deeply appreciate your ongoing patience!
Our friend Meghan Walla-Murphy is co-hosting California naturalist
certification course in Sonoma County through October an November. Email
her for the specifics at phoksumdo.mwm at gmail.com and see
http://www.meghanwallamurphy.com/events.html
Below you will discover a smattering of fascinating new plants, cacti
available in limited quantities and our summer sale price for a selection
of wonderful bromeliads, trees/shrubs, frankincense and Trichocereus
cacti.

Trichocereus macrogonus ‘True?’
Upright bluish green stems. Spines to 1"+. White flowers. The wild origin
of the species is unknown. From European stock, this is believed to be the
original true T. macrogonus clone from which the species was described.
Distinct from T. peruvianus which some have recently renamed as T.
macrogonus as the ever inspiring charade of taxonomical buffoonery around
the genus Trichocereus continues. 5–6" cutting $20
Trichocereus pachanoi BK14518.4 “San Pedro”
The mother was a beautiful clone with fat, blue-green stems, deep
v-notches above each areole and 1/2"+ long spines. Open pollinated, about
5% of the seedlings show monstrose traits so far. From Pino’s Trichocereus
collection, Parque de las Leyendas, Lima, Peru. The original locality data
is missing.
Seed packet $5 / 3–4"+ seedling 1+ year old $14
Trichocereus riomizquensis BK10512.1 “Achuma”
Upright stands to 10'+ tall. 2–5" diameter stems with green to blue-green
to yellow-green epidermis. 4–7 radial spines with 1–3 central spines to 3"
long. Looks to be a distinct spiny form of T. bridgesii. Growing on a
steep hillside next to a home at the entrance to the town of Totora,
Cochabamba, Bolivia, 9,000'. Growing with Buddleja tucumanensis, Carica,
and Asteraceae. Local women call it “achuma” and use it externally to
treat fever. No one knew where it grew wild. We searched where Ritter
first described the plant at Chujllas, and along the Rio Mizque, adjacent
valleys and slopes, but never found a single wild plant, only herds of
feral goats. Z9a
5–6"+ cutting $26
Trichocereus scopulicolus
Upright stands to 15' tall. Dark green stems with 5–8 ribs and tiny
spines. White night blooming flowers, edible fruit. A rare species that is
