11/12/15

Greetings,

We had a very full trip to Argentina this October. Due to some unforeseen
logistics and temporal constraints we did not make it to southern Bolivia
as we had planned. We met with faculty at the University of Cordoba to
hear about their reforestation projects and discuss Neil Logan’s project
with Prosopis in Hawaii/Peru. We hiked to the summit of the monolithic Los
Gigantes mountains in the Sierra Grandes range to observe remnant
populations of Polylepis australistrees. Around Salta we immersed
ourselves in the Podocarpus/Alnus/Juglans/Sambucus/Myrcianthes
cloudforests and hiked great lengths to see a small population of nearly
extinct, undetermined Polylepis species. Throughout the dry forests of the
region we observed surprising morphological diversity amongst the
Anadenathera trees and got to meet many other interesting species that
have long been friend to man such as Geoffroa decorticans and Ziziphus
mistol. We were able to collect ecological data on the Trichocereus
terscheckii/pasacana complex from southern Salta through Jujuy for our
ongoing Trichocereus studies. We searched, unsuccessfully, for 2
undescribed Echeveria species for Guillermo Pino’s work but did find what
may be a couple new Peperomia species. And much more. Due to the time of
year, our seed collections were fairly minimal, we made around 30
accessions which we are still waiting to arrive at the USDA for
inspection. Attached are a few photos.

As we have time to type our notes we will share in greater depth more
about our travel and studies. We thank all of you for your support of our
endeavors!

We have a limited number of specimen plants available listed on our
homepage ( http://sacredsucculents.com ) along with photos. Many of these
plants are one-of-a-kind and have been in our collection for many years.
This is a one time offer for most of these plants–they will not be
available again!

Below you'll find interesting new offerings including new hybrid seed for
you Trichophiles. We also have a selection of plants on sale through
autumn, see the listing at the end of this email.

Our friend Kat Harrison of Botanical Dimensions is opening an ethnobotany
library in our town of Occidental. The opening is this Saturday Nov. 14
from 12 to 5 pm. For full info see -
http://botanicaldimensions.org/2015/11/ethnobotany-library-opening-event-this-saturday-in-occidental/

For those of you in New York our good friend Delia Ackerman is presenting
a retrospcetive of her documetnary films that explore the landscapes and
cultures of Peru on Nov. 13 at 7pm and 14th at 11:30am at The New School:
68 5th Ave (at 13th St), #103 , NYC. See attached flyer.

Canyon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, 3000–4500'. Grows in a humid locale on very
steep canyons walls that only get a few hours of direct sun each day. Well

found in ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and 2 Dendrobium orchids.
Sun and well draining mineral soil. Actively grows August until late
Winter. Keep dry while dormant. Z9b?

Burseraceae. Spiny branched deciduous shrub/tree to 6–25'. Silver-gray
bark, small trifoliate leaves, white flowers and red berries. Native to
arid regions of southern India where it was planted as a living fence but
is now considered increasingly rare. The fragrant sap is known as Mulu
Kilavary and used as an incense and fixative for perfumes. It is used in
traditional medicine as an astringent, antiseptic, diuretic and
carminative. Research shows the bark to have antioxidant, antibacterial
and liver-protective properties. This beneficial plant has yet to be
cultivated outside of India and should grow well in containers as a bonsai
or planted out in frost free regions where Bursera thrive. Z10a
5 seed $5 or 25 seed for $18

Delosperma sphalmanthoides
Aizoaceae. Dense cushions of succulent blue-green upward pointing leaves,

introduction.
2.5–3" crested plant 1+ years old $26

Trichocereus pachanoi BK14518.5 “San Pedro”

Trichocereus riomizquensis BK10512.1 “Achuma”
Upright stands to 10'+ tall. 2–5" diameter stems with green to blue-green

Cochabamba, Bolivia, 9,000'. Growing with Buddleja tucumanensis, Carica,
and Asteraceae. Local women call it “achuma” and use it externally to
treat fever. No one knew where it grew wild. We searched where Ritter
first described the plant at Chujllas, and along the Rio Mizque, adjacent
valleys and slopes, but never found a single wild plant, only herds of
feral goats. Z9a
