Spring greetings,

We posted a spectrum of new specimen plant offerings on the lower half of 
our homepage ( http://sacredsucculents.com ), more photos to come soon. 
These are also listed further on in this email for your perusal. These are 
one of a kind offerings and go fast. We have also posted a list of 
wonderful and sublime species that are discounted on sale this spring.

With the steady stream of mishaps in our life we are now months behind on 
completing and mailing the next Rare Plant List. We continue to beg your 
patience. It is nearly complete and will be mailed early May. It will be 
an extra large issue.

Cactaceae

Trichocereus bridgesii f. cristata 
A few years ago an unusual growth of crested tissue appeared on a specimen 
of this already monstrose plant. Mostly spineless blue-green tissue in 
thin or rounded ridges, sometimes resembling a cresting wave. Get one 
while you can.

Trichocereus camarguensis f. cristata 
Thin fans of cristate growth eventually convolute into coral or brain-like 
clusters. Numerous small white and golden yellow spines obscure the body 
of the plant and give it an angelic fuzzy look (for those of you who 
prefer your angels fuzzy!) Rare crested form of this attractive clumping 
species in the T. huascha complex from near Camargo, Argentina. Rooted 
cuts. Z9a

Trichocereus chalaensisX Trichocereus pachanoi f. monstrosus 
Unusual hybrid of great promise. Many of the seedlings show mutant growth 
with unusual tuberculate ribs and red spines that age to black. Upright 
columnar specimen.

Trichocereus sp. SS02 (=Trichocereus bridgesii)
Dense candelabra stands to 16' tall. Blue-gray/green frosted stems up to 
5" in diameter with 5–7 ribs. Each areole bears 2–4 central spines up to 
1.5" long. White nocturnal flowers. The new growth on old stems is often 
spineless. A distinct form of Trichocereus bridgesii. Z9a

Other Beneficial Plants and Succulents

Agapetes lacei  “Tibetan Huckleberry”
Ericaceae. Caudiciform epiphyte with long arching branches. Little oval 
leaves densely packed in a spiral formation. New growth is pink. Clusters 
of intense red tubular flowers with green tips. Glossy deep red edible 
berries–the “cherry” of huckleberries. Native to the cloud forests of 
Burma, Tibet and Yunnan,China. This rare species is one of our favorites 
in this impressive genus. Rooted cut. Z9a? Plant $28.50 

Agapetes ‘Ludgvan’s Cross’ “Himalayan Huckleberry Hybrid”
A hybrid of A. serpens and A. rugosa. 2–3" pointed leaves and eventually 
forms a woody caudex. Pale-pink lantern flowers with deep rose chevron 
markings are borne in mass along the stems, a sight to see! Edible 
berries. Part shade well draining acid soil. Z8b

Agapetes serpens  “Khursani” “Himalayan Lantern Huckleberry”
Epiphytic evergreen shrub to 2–3'+. Graceful arching braches arising from 
a woody caudex to 18"+. Shocking rose-red lantern-like flowers dangle from 
the branches, a flamboyant display that appeals equally to hummingbirds 
and primates. Lavender colored sweet edible berries. Native to the 
Himalayan mid elevation cloud forests, up to about 9,000'. The caudex of 
some species is edible. Prefers part shade, well draining acid soil and 
regular moisture. Fruits best when cross pollinated with another clone.

Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco  “Quebracho”
Apocynaceae. Awesome oak-like tree 20–50' with a crown of weeping 
branches. Thick cork-like bark, hard yellow-ochre wood highly valued. 
Whorls of 3 stiff, pointed, green leaves. Small yellow flowers. Native to 
the Chaco dry forests of Bolivia and Argentina. The bark is used for lung 
conditions, fever, as an astringent, general tonic and very famous 
aphrodisiac. Contains several alkaloids including yohimbine. Drought 
hardy. Z9b/10a?

Beaucarnea sanctomariana "Santa Maria Ponytail Palm"
Agavaceae. Branching caudiciform tree 12–24' tall. The conical swollen 
trunk can reach 5' across and has thick brown-gray bark with a rectangular 
to polyhedral pattern. The elongated slender branches are crowned with 
spherical rosettes of recurved, bright green, grass like leaves to 2.5' 
long. Branched inflorescence to 3' with many small cream-yellow flowers. 
This newly described endangered species is a microendemic of rocky 
outcrops in the deciduous dry forest of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, 
Oaxaca, Mexico. Z10a

Blechnum sp. BK10512.10
Blechnaceae. Unusual and distinct fern with a rosette of thick compound 
leaves on a small trunk to about 12" tall, like a miniature cycad. New 
growth is a magenta to pink-bronze color. Polylepis lanata forest 
understory and edges. Above Rio Lope Mendoza, Cochabamba Dept., Bolivia. 
This beautiful fern has been slow growing from spores, we finally have a 
few up to size that we can offer for the first time. Z8/9?

Boophane heamanthoides “Gifbol”  “Incwadi”  “Leshoma”
Amaryllidaceae. Immense above ground bulb that forms clumps with age. 
Annually produces a dense umbel of  yellow flowers that turn pink with 
age. Twisted upright leaves to 18" long spread from the bulb like a huge 
fan. Occurs in restricted areas of South Africa. This bulb and its close 
kin B. disticha have a long and extensive history of ethnobotanical use. 
Applied externally for skin diseases and wound healing. Weak decoctions 
are said to be an effective sedative. An arrow poison was made from the 
bulb mixed with Euphorbia latex. The plant is still sometimes utilized as 
a hallucinogen for divination, overdose is often fatal. Slow growing, 
usually flowering after 6–8 years from seed. In the wild plants have been 
found with bulbs over 12" in diameter believed to be over a century old! 
Does best with a well draining soil, at least 50% pumice. They usually 
stay dormant until mid-summer. Water regularly when in leaf, dry while 
dormant. Cultivation is said to ward off bad dreams and bring good luck.

Crinodendron patagua  “Patagua”
Elaeocarpaceae. Rounded, evergreen shrub/tree to 12–30'. Small shiny 
leaves. 1" long bell-shaped porcelain white flowers borne in mass. Endemic 
to central Chile. Used for honey production. Heat and drought tolerant, 
though prefers moisture and part shade. A beautifully showy plant. Z8a

Dunalia spinosa “Yara” “Huajala”
Solanaceae. Multibranched spiny shrub to 6'+. Small leaves and tubular 
blue purple flowers like Iochroma. Seed from the arid puna regions of 
northern Chile. The plant has antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, used 
traditionally for asthma, wound cleansing and toothache. A unique 
hummingbird plant. Drought deciduous and hardy. Prefers sun. The last one 
we have to offer. Z9a?

Erythrina flabelliformis BK101110.1 “Chilicote” Colorin”
Fabaceae. Pachycaul tree 10–30’+. Smooth grey bark with striations of 
white and green. Deciduous trifoliate leaves and spined stems. Many 
flowered racemes of brilliant bright red flowers in the Spring. Red to 
orange or yellow seeds. Restricted areas of southern Arizona, new Mexico 
and remnant dry forest throughout northern Mexico and Baja. The seeds are 
often used in jewelry, though they are quite toxic. Small amounts are used 
medicinally. There is speculation that the seeds may have once been used 
as a psychoactive additive to maize beers by the Chiricahua Apache. The 
lasy one we have to offer. Z9b/10a

Hechtia sp. ‘Colima’
Bromeliaceae. Dark green to purple-brown rosettes of recurved leaves with 
silver flecking. Yellow marginal thorns. Flowers not yet seen. Seed from 
Colima, Mexico. Z9b/10a?

Hechtia sp. ‘El Mate’
Bright lime-green to brownish rosettes of recurved leaves with silvery 
undersides. Flowers not yet seen. Seed from El Mate, Mexico. Z9b/10a?

Macleania coccoloboides
Large woody caudex, upright to arching branches 5 to 15' with leathery 
leaves 4–5" long. Clusters of waxy, red tubular flowers tipped white. 
Purple-blue to black edible fruit rich in antioxidants with high iron 
chelating abilities. Rare blueberry relative endemic to the cloud forests 
of Pichincha and Cotopaxi, Ecuador up to 11,000'. This is one of the 
larger growing species, a real hummingbird’s delight. Rooted cutting. Z9b

Methysticodendron amesianum "Culebra Borrachero"
Solanaceae. Large bush or tree to 20' tall. Dark green linear leaves up to 
1.5' long. Large, hanging, trumpet like white flowers with a split corolla 
and intoxicating fragrance. This extremely rare plant, endemic to the 
Sibundoy Valley of Columbia, is thought to likely be a unique Brugmansia 
mutation. Used as a medicine and dangerous hallucinogen by the Igano and 
Kamsa Indians. Likes rich moist soil and regular feedings. Z9b/10a\

Passiflora trisecta? BK14513.9  “Kita Tumbo”
Passifloraceae. Tendrilled vine to 12' or more. Slightly fuzzy trifoliate 
leaves. Egg shaped green fruit with a sour-sweet edible pulp. Flowers not 
seen, if identification is correct they should be white and nocturnal. Dry 
forest above Caserio Santa Rosa, 6800'. Z9b?

Polylepis incarum BK08601.4 "Kewiña"
Rosaceae. Small gnarled tree to 20' tall. Grayish-green furry leaflets. 
Beautiful flaking bronze-red bark. These trees have a very distinct 
presence. A species endemic to the Lake Titicaca region of Bolivia. Seed 
collected from old trees growing on sandstone hills, north side of Isla 
del Sol, 12,500'. One of the most sacred trees of the Andes, used 
medicinally for tuberculosis, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Grows very well 
for us in northern California. Rooted cut of clone A. Highly endangered, 
should be planted far and wide. Z7?

Sceletium sp. SB661 “Kougoed” “Kanna”
Low growing species with large succulent green leaves. Extra large white 
flowers. A handsome plant that tends to keep compact growth even when 
given rich soil and moisture. May be a robust form of S. tortuosum. Same 
medicinal properties as other Sceletium. Seed collected by S. Brack, 
Brandrivier, South Africa. Z9a?
