Cactaceae
Trichocereus bridgesii ‘Reynolds’ “Achuma”
Spiny blue heirloom clone collected by the late cactus enthusiast D.
Reynolds in the 1960s when he was just 12 years old! He found it growing
in front of a motel along El Camino Real, then a small road, in Mountian
View, CA. Dave had a massive candelabra of this plant growing at his house
when we met him, sadly after his passing his family had the plant cut and
taken to the dump. Thankfully Dave gave us cuttings and we offer them here
in his memory.
3 ~ 11–13"+ cuttings $28.50* each

Trichocereus bridgesii X Trichocereus sp. Luther Burbank
The last of this interesting hybrid we have to offer.
1 ~ 6"+ plant 4 years old $22.50

Trichocereus pachanoi f. cristata BK14518.5 “Mutant San Pedro”
The parent had dark green short columnar stems of molten-wax appearance
and fans of cristate growth. Open pollinated. Parque de las Leyendas,
Lima, Peru. The progeny has a very high incidence of mutant growth. Rooted
cuts from several seedlings, each totally unique. Get one while you can!
2 ~ 3"+ crested plants $24.50 each

Trichocereus pachanoi X Trichocereus sp. ‘Juul’s Giant’
From seed sprouted in 1998. They range from the short spined you’d expect
to attractive plants with 1"+ long spines. An old favorite. 2 ~ 6–8"
short spined cuttings $19.50 each / 2 ~ 7–9" long spined cuttings
$20.50 each

Trichocereus pachanoi f. monstrosus BK08611.4 Cl. A “Mutant San Pedro”
We had a number of mutants show up amongst these Peruvian seedlings. This
is the first clone we’ve propagated. Small columns with normal to “melted”
ribs. Often branches and will eventually form wavy fans of cristate growth
as well. Rooted cut. Z9a
1 ~ Plant with 2 ‘normal’ stems, 9" and 6" that will grow monstrose
$32.50*

Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Los Gentiles’ “Pichu” “San Pedro Macho”
Fat blue frosted upright stems 4–6” in diameter. Large fuzzy areoles with
6+ short radial spines and 1 or more long stout central spines. New spines
originally blood red to yellow, fading to black and then dull gray or
white with age. White flowers. Ripe fruits are considered a choice
“Pitahaya”. Occurs at 7,000– 10,000’ in the central highlands of Peru near
Matucana. Often grows in a acequia irrigated agricultural systems on rock
wall borders of andenes and milpa style gardens. A preferred species being
harvested for the herbalist markets of Peru. Only seven ribbed stems are
gathered and the cactus is referred to as “Pichu”. Said to have been
tended to for at least 3,800 years by the lineage of people known as “Los
Gentiles”. Z9a
2 ~ 6–8" cuttings $28.50 each

Trichocereus sp. Luther Burbank “Quisco”
Upright columns to 10'+. Gray-green stems to 6" diameter with 7–9 ribs and
yellow-gray spines up to 2.5" long. White flowers. Another plant in the T.
peruvianus complex. A large stand grew for many years at the California
home and gardens of horticultural mystic Luther Burbank, but was removed
during a renovation years back. In his writings it was referenced as the
Quisco cactus, of Chilean origin. Z9a
2 ~ 6"+ by 3.5"+ diameter cutting $24.50 each

Other Beneficial Plants

Agapetes ‘Ludgvan’s’ X Agapetes serpens
Ericaceae. The first Agapetes hybrid we made. Favors the larger leaves of
the mother. Woody caudex, has not bloomed yet but we expect relatively
large tubular flowers with some red and grape size sweet berries. First
offering. Z8b?
1 ~ Plant 6–7 years old $29.50

Commiphora simplicifolia “Madgascar Myrrh”
Burseraceae. Small thorny tree with thickened caudiciform trunk. Gray to
golden peeling bark and simple leaves. Highly aromatic. Madagascar
endemic. Beautiful rare species that does well in cultivation. Rooted cuts
from seed grown clones. Z10b
10"+ branched plant $24.50

Macleania cordifolia X Macleania ??
Ericaceae. First offering of this open pollinated hybrid. M. cordifolia
has large caudiciform lignotubers, arching branches to 3’+, clusters of
bright red tubular flowers with white tips. Translucent purple edible
fruit. Who don’t know who the father is. Z9b
1 ~ 8”+ plant 3 years old $38.50

Oxalis peduncularis
Clusters of upright succulent stems 4–16”+ tall. Blue-green, swollen
succulent leaf petioles tipped with small clover-like leaves that drop in
dry conditions. The plant takes on vibrant reddish hues in strong light.
Yellow flowers. Native to the warm interAndean valleys of Peru, often
growing as a lithophyte on old Incan walls. Can grow quite lush and tall
in moist areas. Though non-tuberous it is part of the Oxalis tuberosa
alliance, it may have contributed to the development of the cultivated
“Oca” and could be potentially useful for future breeding efforts with the
crop. Tolerant of hot, dry conditions - a true succulent xerophyte. Z9a/b?

2 ~ 16" multistemmed plants 4+ years old $16.50 each

Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan Bai”
Paeoniaceae. “Tree” paeony, woody stems to 5’. Pinnate foliage, white or
rarely pale pink flowers 6–10” across with a sweet musky scent. Rare
species from the deciduous forests of Henan, Shaanxi, and Hunan, China.
Overcollection for medicine has lead to a disappearance of wild
populations in all but Henan. Cultivated on a large scale in Sichuan and
Anhui for the root bark which is used for wounds, as an antifungal,
antispasmodic and to increase circulation in the brain (making it
something of a “smart drug”). The flower petals may be cooked and eaten
like similar species. Rich soil and bright shade. Z4a
1 ~ Plant 6 years old $26.50

Podocarpus parlatorei “Pino de monte” “Andean Pine”
Podocarpaceae. Evergreen tree to 40’, greyish bark and flattened green
needles. Very durable wood. Podocarpus forests use to cover vast portions
of the Andes up to 13,000’, but other than a reserve in Ecuador and
central Peru, these forests are no more. Needless to say, propagation is
vital. It’s mindboggling that Mexican pine is being planted all over these
mountains while this amazing native species is slipping away. Rooted
cuttings. Z7/8?
2 ~ 12–15”+ treelets $22.50 each

Rubus sp. TB17
Rosaceae. A lovely bramble with arching lightly thorned branches.
Trifoliate leaves with slender lanceolate leaflets. Tasty blackberry
fruit. One of the many obscure Andean blackberries that merit cultivation.
T. Baldwin seed collection Bellavista, Ecuador. Z8/9?
2 ~ 6"+ seedlings $18.50 each

Salvia haenkei BK10511.2 “Chumu chumu”
Labiatae. Shrub to 6’+. Dark green leaves with white undersides. Long
spikes of deep-red tubular flowers. The edible flowers are made into a
flavorful, brilliant red, sweet tea. The leaves are used in ethnomedicine
for musculo-skeletal and dermatological problems. Mountains between Arani
and Rodeo, Cochabamba, Bolivia, 11,000’. This fantastic Salvia is unknown
in cultivation. Regrows from the crowns in a hard frost. Z8a/b
1 ~ Plant 5 years old $24.50

Sambucus peruviana BK10427.6 “Sauco” “Guindo” “Andean Elderberry”
Caprifoliaceae. Fast growing tree to 15–30'+ with distinct gnarled trunk
and large compound leaves. Self fertile umbels of white flowers. Esteemed
for its huge clusters of deep purple, sweet berries, which are the largest
fruit of any elder species. Collected above Patacancha, just over 13,000'.
Widely planted since preColumbian times, thought to be used in Incan
agroforestry. The fruit are popular made into marmalade and other sweets
throughout the Andes. The leaves are said to repel insects and the rot
resistant wood is made into tools and flutes. An infusion of the flowers
is used to expel phlegm and fever. Dried leaf powder is rubbed into the
skin to reduce rheumatic inflammation. The antioxidant rich fruit likely
have many of the medicinal properties of other elder species. This
versatile tree is a superb addition to any edible/medicinal garden.
Tolerant of wet subtropical climates as well as cold. Sun to part shade,
prefers some moisture, but tolerant of adverse conditions. Will resprout
from the base in hard frost. Seed grown plants. Z8a
2 ~ 16–18"+ plants 4 years old $30 each

Satyria boliviana HBG90802
Ericaceae. Epiphytic shrub with pendent branches 2–6' long. Lime-green,
coriaceaus, lanceolate leaves, lightly pilose. New growth pink-bronze.
Inflorescence covered in tiny soft white hairs, bearing up to 100+ flowers
with globose urn-shaped corollas, red with white tips. Edible berries high
in antioxidants. This lovely rare and endangered Bolivian endemic is only
known from a few collections, Yungas cloudforest, La Paz and Carrasco,
Cochabamba, near 8000'. Rooted cuttings. Z9a/b?
2 ~ Plants $34.50 each
