Greetings,
Sacred Succulents has always been a small family run business, for all
practical purposes most of it has really been a one man show. Yet it
is also a complex ever growing entity. For 23 years now a few thousand
of you fine folks around the world have contributed to our existence
and ongoing endeavors. There are no words we know that can fully
express our deep and sincere gratitude for your support and enthusiasm
over the years. We would not exist without you. Collectively we have
introduced hundreds of new plants into cultivation, hopefully
safeguarding some from extinction and cultural loss. And of course at
the heart of our gratitude is the plants themselves–we are all truly
blessed to be born of such a fecund world with an astounding diversity
of vegetal wonders to nourish and flourish us.
October and early November saw the hottest, driest early autumn in
memory here in NorCal. The temperature dropped precipitously 2+ weeks
ago causing some novel frost damage. We've never had a dry cold like
this. It was a scramble to get hundreds of plants moved back into the
greenhouses and secured for winter, a task we usually tend gradually
over 5-6 weeks (with extra help) which we crammed into 10 exhausting
days of solo work. This has consumed most of our time and energy
recently but is now mostly complete. We finally got real rain a week
ago, greatly reducing (at least temporarily) the anxiety of wildfires
possibly destroying our home and livelihood.
We are still in the process of deciding on how to best reconfigure
aspects of how we do mail order so we can make it more manageable and
functional in the face of ongoing calamities and climatic convulsions.
Right now we expect to put a hold on shipping orders late December
through early to mid March. More on this soon.
Specimen Plant Mini-Auction Fundraiser: We had attempted to launch a
new auction at the beginning of the week but of course we were beset
by some unexpected issues with the website. We definitely have
gremlins or some ghost in the machine, the regularity of tech problems
the past 2 years has entered the absolute absurd! After some wrangling
we managed to appease these powers for the moment and now have the
auction posted and underway –See partway down our homepage for the
terms and listings: www.sacredsucculents.com Please read the full
terms before bidding. Use benkamm at monitor.net for email bids. The
auction closes at 6:30 pm PST, Monday, November 30. _This may be the
last auction we hold until spring._
We have a handful of unique plants on sale until December 21, see the
list at the bottom of this email. We also have quite a few new
Specimen Plants available, see the listings below the auction on our
homepage.
Our friend Richard Felger died on October 31. He was a giant in the
world of ethnobotany and conservation, a poet and man of great heart.
He left the world greatly enriched by his work and books, yet we can't
help feel the world is still a bit poorer without his presence... For
more on Richard's amazing work see - https://www.desertfoodplants.org/
For a sketch of Richard's life see the attached pdf file. We acquired
Richard's library this spring and once we finish cataloging the
hundreds of books we will have some rare titles available for purchase
next year.
Our compadre Neil Logan, ethnobotanist and agroforester extraordinare,
has helped develop a highly useful free online platform Agroforestry
Design Tool™ (see www.AgroforestryX.com ) With roots in the
indigenous agricultural systems of Pacific Islands and tropical world,
the Agroforestry Design Tool™ helps you to customize an agroforest
for a particular site and goals in an easy-to-follow framework. Neil
and colleagues are holding two free webinars (on Dec. 2 & Jan. 13) to
introduce the tool and its use. These are filling up fast so register
now, visit www.AgroforestryX.com and click on the “Support” tab
for instructions. For an example of the AgorofestryX animation see:

Our other Andean coconspirator Matt Magee has a new online course
starting in January: Rebuilding Sacred Landscapes – an online
journey through the art and energetic construction of sacred items, an
in depth look at the invisible infrastructure of some of the most
important medicine pieces used by healing practitioners from Peru and
Bolivia including the art and use of Seguros– ritually arranged
herbs that are placed into a bottle to rebuild a sacred
landscape--utilizing some of our favorite high Andean plants. Anyone
wanting to learn more about the behind the scenes working of cross
cultural shamanism, hands on ceremonial techniques and the traditional
knowledge of the Andes should sign up for Matt's unique classes. See:

We encourage everyone to sign up for the insightful, entertaining and
important writing our friend Erik Davis is sharing through his blog
