Specimen Plant Mini-Auction Fundraiser ends tonight!: Auction closes
tonight at 6:30 pm PST, Monday, November 30. See partway down our
homepage for the terms and listings: www.sacredsucculents.com Please
read the full terms before bidding. Use _benkamm at monitor.net_ for all
email bids. We honor the email bids as first come first serve, so if
we don’t respond right away—do not worry, we will honor your bid
in the order it was received! Towards the end of the auction can get
hectic and we may not be able to notify you in a timely manner if
you’ve been outbid during this last phase–we recommend checking
the website periodically to see the current high bids. After the
auction closes you will be contacted by email late evening or the
following morning for the auction plants you have won. _This may be
the last auction we hold until spring._
We have a handful of unique plants on sale until December 21, see the
list at the bottom of this email. We also have quite a few new
Specimen Plants available, see the listings below the auction on our
homepage. New seed listed below.
We have to create some time to get caught up with writing, catalog
revisions and nursery renovations, so right now we expect to put a
hold on shipping new orders from late December through early to mid
March. That means orders postmarked after Winter Solstice, December 21
will not mail until we resume shipping in March (with some exceptions
such as wholesale orders.) More details on all this soon.
Some New Seed:
_Capsicum galapagoense_ “Galapagos Hot Pepper”Solanaceae. Upright
perennial species 2–6' tall. The stems and small leaves are covered
in little hairs giving the plant a furry silver appearance. White
flowers and tiny round pepper fruit the size of a pea or smaller;
orange to red when ripe and quite spicy. An endangered Galapagos
endemic, Wiggins & Porter report it only from Isabela and Santa Cruz
Islands “in shade of forest trees and shrubs, moist areas.” Easy
to grow in mild climates, our mother plants were shy to bloom for the
first several years but are now copious fruiters. Conservation through
cultivation is encouraged. Z10a? Seed packet $6
_Coccinea abyssinica _“Anchote” “Shushe”
“Ajjo”Cucurbitaceae. Forms a large perennial caudex/tuber with
annual tendrilled vines 5–15' long. Leaves cordate to 5 lobate.
Dioecious yellow flowers and orange-red fleshy fruits. Native to the
mountains of Ethiopa from 4300–9200'; _Podocarpus-Celtis_ forests
and_ Euclea _scrub. Cultivated since antiquity for the nutritious
edible tuber (starch & calcium rich) and young leaves and stem shoots.
After 4 months from seed the tuber yield in Ethiopia is reported to be
similar to potato. Interestingly the fruits of cultivated landraces
are not reported to be eaten but fruits of wild plants are. Used to
treat tuberculosis, cancer and to fatten livestock. The caudex/tuber
is central to the cultural identity of the Wallaga Oromo people of
Ethiopia, it is known as a sacred relative to pregnant women. Easy to
grow, we treat it like a standard caudiciform succulent but we
encourage experimentation growing it as a root crop. Z8/9? For a
paper on _C. abyssinica_ nutrition see-

_Ibervillea sonorae_ BK101109.1Cucurbitaceae. Forms a large, flat,
grey caudex to several feet across. Tendrilled vine with deep cut
leaves, yellow flowers and egg size red fruit. Growing in the shade of
_Bursera microphylla_, Cape of Baja. A caudiciphile’s delight!
Extremely drought hardy. Z10a 5 seed $4
_Solanum sessiliflorum _'Dwarf' “Cocona”Solanaceae. Upright shrub
with large velvety leaves. Rare dwarf from to about 3' tall. Pale
green self fertile flowers. 2–4" yellow, orange or red edible fruit
with a yellow flesh and fruity sub-acid flavor. Close relative of
“naranjilla”, cultivated throughout the low elevation Andes and
tropical regions of South America. An ancient cultivar that likely
originated in the Amazon basin, though it is not found in the wild.
Sprout like tomatoes. Highly prized for the refreshing juice and used
in all manner of desserts. Contains cholesterol reducing compounds.
Easy to grow, can fruit in as little as 9 months from seed. Protect
from cold. Z10a/b Seed packet $4
