Press release
Kennebunkport, Maine, June 7, 2009
Butterflies made from collages of plant material will be displayed in
Kennebunkport, Maine at the Gallery on Chase Hill in the annual “>From the Garden
” show. The works, part of Daphne Boyer’s garden-inspired art, will be
exhibited from June 27 – July 16.
Daphne has drawn on her plant science and entomology studies, as well as
her renowned garden in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, to create
breathtaking paper mobile sculptures. It is through the simple elegance of these
hand-crafted paper butterflies that she conveys her sense of wonder about
plant – insect symbiosis, and her concern for plant pollinators. “We can thank
pollinators for one of every three mouthfuls of food we eat,” she says.
An organic gardener for 30 years, Daphne has vast experience collaborating
with the bug world. The insect population is just one of the environmental
issues she addresses in her work. While the observer might be drawn in by
the beauty and simplicity of her pieces, for Daphne the works form part of
her social commentary.
A student of textile design, Daphne had to abandon all art-making in 1990s
when she became ill from the chemicals used in fabric dyeing, painting and
sculpture. She retreated to her garden, and it not only healed her, but
opened the door to a new way of creating using inert materials in her
low-chem studio in Sutton, Quebec.
Daphne considers her latest sculptures a tribute to the fragile power of
pollinators. “My garden is home to beautiful plants, but they wouldn’t be
here without pollinating insects. I hope my art offers others the
opportunity to realize their beauty, and feel encouraged to maintain the habitat
necessary for their survival,” says Boyer.
Boyer’s self-produced creations marry good design, digital imaging and
hand-made craftsmanship in limited-edition sculptures. The complicated
production process (she creates designs from plant leaves, flowers and stems which
she then prints onto paper and sculpts into insect shapes) results in the
creation of sculptures that are true to the collection’s name – Flying
Flowers. She says she hopes her clients will love her work and wonder what
she is commenting on when they buy it.
