Colleagues:

If you are interested in bird-pollination in New Zealand please look up
other papers by David Kelly.  He has a nice web page and also works on
pollination of the remaining showy mistletoes (Loranthaceae).  Now New
Zealand has (had?) only three species of nectar-feeding birds.  Australia,
by contrast, has 40-50 as nectar-feeding extends beyond the honeyeaters
(Meliphagidae) and some native plants are also pollinated by native
Zosteropidae, Acanthizidae and loriid parrots (lorrikeets).  In fact, some
honeyeater species are best treated as insect and fruit eaters and play no
discernible role in the pollination of the Aussie flora.  Nothing is
perfect.
