The Fate of Bees

National Pollinator Week started June 20 and will last until June 26. In case you never heard of it, Pollinator Week was created in the Senate a few years ago to bring awareness to the issue of the decline of common pollinator populations such as birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths and beetles. These little creatures, some less pleasant than others, play a major role in the balance of our eco system and the good health of our planet. By carrying pollen within flowers and from flower to flower of the same species, they not only help insure the proper fertilization of these plants but also the successful production of their fruit and seeds. More than one thousand species of plants need to be pollinated to produce many of the most common food and beverages we depend on such as apples, blueberries, melons, peaches, pumpkins, vanilla, almonds, chocolate and coffee among others. Who would have thought that such unobtrusive little creatures could be carrying the balance of our pla
 net on their frail shoulders?

Burt’s Bees has been supporting bees, its favorite pollinator, since 2007. This June, in honor of National Pollinator week, Burt’s Bees has partnered with renowned jewelry designer Helen Ficalora to raise awareness on this issue. Inspired by her love of nature, the designer created an exclusive sterling silver charm for Burt’s Bees featuring the beloved insect enclosed in a beehive. It was introduced to the press at the Helen Ficalora boutique last Wednesday in a kick off event in honor of this year’s National Pollinator Week. By making a contribution of at least $150 by September 30 to the Pollinator Partnership, a non–profit organization dedicated to the conservation of pollinating animals, you can receive this exquisite sterling silver charm and a Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm. The donation will also allow a school selected by the Pollinator Partnership to receive a “Bee Smart School Garden Kit” featuring all you need to create a living classroom.

You can find more information at http://www.pollinator.org. Also check http://www.helenficalora.com for more information on her jewelry line and http://www.burtsbees.com to learn more about the health of bees and the colony collapse disorder that affects them and receive a free packet of bee friendly seeds for your garden, (whatever that may be in the city!).

So much depends on these little creatures and on our support of these threatened species for the health of our planet and to keep nature as we love it.
