 Role
 As part of Agriculture and Rural Development's (ARD) Bee Team, this scientific research position conducts applied research in support of Alberta's apiculture (honey bee, leafcutter bee (LCB) and pollination) industry. Reporting to the Branch Head, Pest Surveillance, the Apiculture Researcher leads and collaborates in multi-disciplinary research and participates in provincial and national research networks. This position is responsible for developing research programs to meet assessed research needs of the honey beekeeping, LCB and pollination industries.

Working closely with the Provincial Apiculturist, this position develops and disseminates scientific and technological knowledge to address information gaps and management issues in relation to the research needs of industry. The successful candidate will assess research needs, plan and coordinate projects, develop experimental protocols, analyze data, report research results and formulate management recommendations for use by beekeepers, LCB operators and pollinators. Field and laboratory experiments are often conducted in partnership with private industry and federal/provincial researchers, and are supported financially by provincial and federal governments and/or private sector sponsors.

Key responsibilities of the Apiculture Researcher will include:
- Initiating research projects to test and develop technologies to assist industry to be competitive and sustainable

- Promoting networking between the beekeeping industry, ARD, educational institutions, other commodity organizations and other provincial and federal government partners

- Delivering new and emerging technology for growth and improving the Apiculture industry in Alberta.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate strong leadership skills in managing and conducting research projects both in the field and laboratory, project management and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work in a team environment. You will be looked upon to provide scientific expertise and support to industry clients.


 Qualifications
 PhD in Entomology with specialization in Apiculture plus at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in managing and conducting complex research projects is required. Experience with diagnostic research as well as technology transfer is required. Supervisory experience is an asset. Equivalencies will be considered. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.


 Salary
 $2,772.38- $3,652.68 bi-weekly (Effective April 1, 2012)


 Notes
 Some travel throughout Alberta will be required for this position. The final candidate must have a valid Alberta drivers' license and will be asked to obtain a drivers' abstract.
