Dear Friends,

TheGlobal conference on Entomology will be held from November 8-12, 2013 in Kuching,Sarawak, Malaysia. The major objective of the 2nd Global Conference onEntomology is to showcase recent advances in entomological research anddevelopment in the insect world. The skills and knowledge of entomologists areneeded worldwide helping farmers to produce crops and livestock moreefficiently through sound pest management strategies, fighting to saveendangered species and fragile ecosystems, and preventing insects fromspreading agents that cause serious diseases.
Insectsprovide a readily accessible resource for us to use in developing a betterscientific understanding of the world around us. For more than 350 millionyears, insects have evolved and adapted to become the creatures we know today.Through the millennia, insects have become an essential part of everyterrestrial and freshwater ecosystem. They are the most numerous and diverseform of life on Earth. About one million species are known, and it is estimatedthat 10 million are undiscovered. The study of insects helps us increase thebounty of the land and preserve its natural beauty. It also helps us understandhow to protect lives and property from harmful insects. Food shortages stillexist in many parts of the world. About 40 percent of the world’s foodproduction is lost to insect pests each year. Sound entomological research andextension programs are at the forefront of the sciences involving theseimportant problems. Although reducing vast insect-caused losses will notautomatically solve the hunger problems – other economic and cultural factorsare important too – entomology is a central part of the solution. Vast areas ofthe world are dominated by insects that transmit parasites that cause yellowfever, river blindness, chagas disease, and sleeping sickness. Malaria, plague, and tick-borne fevers are diseases of worldwide importance, and entomologistslead the way in research to combat these ailments. Entomologists are seekingnew, less expensive ways to prevent these losses. The scheduled conference isorganized by the Dr V Sivaram Research Foundation and Century Foundation,Bangalore and co-organizers/supporters of this event are Department ofAgriculture, Government of Sarawak and University of Technology Mara, Sarawak.
The scheduledconference is supported by Government of Sarawak, Kuching and SarawakConvention Bureau. In addition to these agencies, the Directorate ofAgriculture, Sarawak; University of Technology Mara, Sarawak, and severalEntomological Societies, Universities and research organization have extendedfull support and technical guidance for the successful organization of theconference so as to  provide a scientificplatform to exchange the information on the recent advances in entomologicalresearch and to bring together the International scientific community involvedin the study of insects.
